ABOUT THE WORK:
The idea of embracing destruction is nothing new. Artists have been destroying their work (and others' work) for years. Baldessari made cookies out of his work, Bacon slashed his, and Rauschenberg erased de Kooning. I find myself relating more to Jasper Johns in the destruction of my work who famously said, upon destroying his work, that it was time "to stop becoming an artist and to be an artist."
Simply put, these works are creation from destruction. They don't come from a place of defeat, but of growth and optimism. They are about letting go, but they're also about learning to live intentionally and without the baggage of the past.
